Dr. Leonard Zon '79: "Developing New Therapies with Stem Cells - a Fishy Tale"
From Jeffrey Yorgey on May 25th, 2017
Blood stem cells are used clinically to treat patients with leukemia after chemotherapy. The process is curative and only needs to be done once, yet about 25% of patients die from the procedure. Dr. Zon's lab has been using zebrafish as a model system to find chemicals that increase the activity of blood stem cells. One of these chemicals has been developed into a drug, and is being tested in patients with leukemia.
